about

These 3 songs and demo were created to be a soundtrack for an art installation that, to this point, has not seen the light of day. The idea for the installation was to be an aspect of the artists memory. I wanted to make songs that were repetitious, somewhat sterile, and influenced by French Ye Ye music from the sixties. I had hoped to make at least 45 minutes of music, intersperse it with other sampled voices and then filter it all so it sounded like it was coming out of an AM radio broadcast. Further, the sound design was to have included a series of small audio speakers placed in certain parts of the room but buried within the construction of the installation. The idea was to create something that was both catchy and throwaway but also sinister and annoying. I wanted it to feel familiar and unwelcoming at the same time to heighten the dream like atmosphere my friend described to me.

Unfortunately, I started working on this at the same time I started finishing up my licensure program to become a teacher and was quickly distracted from finishing. I had many ideas that didn't come to pass. This is, the raw, bare bones of this project.

The general process (or the idea for the process) for this was to come up with beats on my drum set, simple beats that attempted to emulate what I was listening to at the time to get a sense of structure for these songs. Then I would recreate them digitally. Once I had the beat down I would construct the rest around it through creating new sounds or working with samples. When the frame of the melody was molded, I would then go on youtube and look up French Acapella performances and cut them up to fit what I had. The results were varied, but I found it all highly amusing.

The project in total would have been quite ambitious and, ultimately, would have required more resources (time and money) to actually realize in full. The results were based on the tools that I had, but I would have loved to have actually recorded these songs in a low-fi setting with a live band. Immersing myself in French Ye Ye for several weeks and then applying my own sensibilities to it made for yet another unique approach to making music, stretching me beyond my previous understandings of music making and approaching songs with a new process and finite goal.
